In Special Recognition  .  .  .

It took the world nearly seven years to discover what Wrinkles of Washington! had known since 1995. That's when Joanie Roper made her debut in "Sentimental Journey", the first of six WOW! fall productions. She has been a star in our crown ever since, and she now shines with equal brilliance in our nation's firmament as well.

In July, 2001, our own Ms. Roper was a competitor in the Ms. National Senior Citizen Pageant - a competition of women from across the continent that showcases the "glamour, vitality, and marketability of America's elderly population." She emerged as third runner-up, although it is difficult to imagine two other women more glamorous, vital, or marketable.

She is remarkably talented as well. The song that contributed to her high placement in the competition was one featured in the WOW Spring show and many gigs - "All That Jazz" - which she performs either as a solo or in company with a wonderful dance ensemble. She likes her music hot, and she sizzles when she sings such numbers as "Orange Colored Sky, "Old Black Magic, "Lili Marlene, and "Le Jazz Hot. Yet she also has a distinct flair for the dramatic, as shown by a plaintively lilting "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina.

Joanie had to hold back tears when she heard her name called, lest her eyelashes roll down her chin. But wherever her eyelashes might reside at any given time she views every day as "beautiful and wonderful." We agree. Joanie, you are beautiful and wonderful, and we are so proud of you!

If you peruse the links to Fall Shows and Spring Shows, you will find many of those names prominently listed. This board is not lacking in production expertise, knowledge of the community and its needs, or getting the most out of seniors with a hankering for singing, dancing and/or acting.
